Why You Will Always Exist

The effort to understand the universe is one of the very few things that lifts human life a little bit above the level of a farce and gives it some of the grace of a tragedy.

Windows - Backup Basics - Windows View Online

What should I backup? A: Your Windows Boot Drive

1] Your C: Hard Drive as a bootable backup (this is called a Bootable Drive Disk Image).

Why should I backup my bootable Hard Drive?

  • If your computer refuses to start Windows, a bootable backup allows you to recover to the last saved bootable backup.

Why can’t I just use System Restore to revert to last known good System Backup?

  • This sometimes Does Not Work. Especially, if the problem is a failing Hard Drive, that needs replacing.

Why can’t I just use the System Restore CDs or special partition recovery that came with the computer?

  • This will revert the computer as it was out of the box. Your added software will need to be re-installed. Your files and information will be lost, if they are NOT backed up.

What should I backup? A: Your Documents and Settings folder

2] Your user’s Documents and Settings is on your Boot Drive C:.

Why should I backup my Documents and Settings? If I make a bootable backup in Step 1], they will be backed up.
Step 1] is done once, or every 6 months, or after installing new software. It will not be current.

What should I backup? A: Your other saved files

3] Your files that are NOT stored in Documents and Settings on your Boot Drive C:.

Why wouldn’t my files be in my Documents and Settings?

  • If you save your files to someplace other than your Desktop, your My Documents, your My Music, your My Pictures, or directly into your Documents and Settings folder - they are NOT in Documents and Settings.
  • Your files could be loose on Drive C: or on another partition or another drive (either internal or external)

Where should I backup?

1] An external hard drive is most common. Another internal hard drive for desktop computers is also common. You can find Today's best deals at DealNews - DealMac - NewEgg

Depending on the SIZE of your file collection, an external or additional internal drive is inexpensive - $65 to $100.

What size is my file collection?
Right click on your Documents and Settings folder and choose Properties in the menu.

Where is my Documents and Settings folder?
Boot Drive C: > Documents and Settings > [your username] folder (Mine is 2.25Gb today.)

2] A USB flash (thumb) drive may be large enough. May2010 the largest sizes are 32Gb, 64Gb, and 128Gb..

3] A CD (700Mb) or DVD (4.3Gb) or DVD-DL (8.5Gb) may be large enough for your files.

4] Another computer at your location can be used.

5] A network storage device at your location can work about NAS

6] A neighbor’s or friend’s computer can be used. (If both has a fast internet connection)
CrashPlan

7] An internet file storage service. Mozy or Carbonite or SkyDrive with Windows Live Account.

What Windows Backup Software should I use?

1] For your boot drive backup to disk image I recommend. Macrium Reflect (FREE)
2] For your documents and files, I recommend GFI Backup (FREE)
3] For your documents and files, another choice is Cobian Backup 9 (free) (FREE)

Mac OS X - Backup Basics - Backup Easy - Mac OS X

What should I backup? A: Your OS X Startup Drive
1] Your Startup Drive in a bootable backup (this is called a Bootable Drive Disk Image).

Why should I backup my bootable Hard Drive?

  • If your computer refuses to boot, a bootable backup allows you to recover to the last saved bootable backup.

Why can’t I just reinstall OS X using the Archive and Install option?

  • Sometimes this Does Not Work. Especially, if the problem is a failing Hard Drive, that needs replacing.

Why can’t I just use the System Restore CDs that came with the computer?

  • This will revert the computer as it was out of the box. Your added software will need to be re-installed. Your files and information can be lost, if they are NOT backed up.

What should I backup? A: Your User’s folder
2] Your User’s folder on your Startup Drive.
Why should I backup my User’s folder? If I make a bootable backup in Step 1], they will be backed up. Step 1] is done once, or every 6 months, or after installing new software. It will not be current.

3] Your files that are NOT stored in your User’s folder on your Startup Drive.
Why wouldn’t my files be in my User’s Folder?

  • If you save your files to someplace other than your Desktop, your Documents, your Music, your Pictures, or directly into your Startup Drive - they are NOT in your User’s folder.
  • Your files could be loose on another partition or another drive (either internal or external)

Where is my User’s folder? Startup Drive > Users Folder > [your username] folder
What size is my file collection? Highlight your User’s folder and choose Get Info in the FILE menu.

What Mac OSX Backup Software should I use?
1] For your Startup drive backup to disk image I recommend. SuperDuper! (Free or $27 for extra features)
2] For your documents and files, I recommend SilverKeeper (FREE) or ChronoSync ($40)

Email Basics - Things You Should Know

Multiple Email Clients View Online
You can have two or six email clients viewing your email at the same time.
Why would I do that?
If your email exists in two email clients, you have a backup of your email available at any time. This can be useful in troubleshooting email problems.
If one email client corrupts and loses all your email you have a backup.
I use Webmail in my browser for my email??
You can also use an email client to access your Gmail, or AOL, or HotMail or Yahoo email. You may find that useful.

Thunderbird and Postbox Express are two free email clients for Windows and Macintosh.

Email Backup - IMPORTANT

If you feel your email records are important, and you do not backup your email, you may be seeking disaster.

Macintosh - Email Backup is an easy to use, automated email backup solution. I have not tested this utility extensively. There is a free and pro version $10
Download

Windows - Static Email Backup can easy backup your message store from Windows Mail, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Outlook, Becky!, Thunderbird, IncrediMail and Eudora. $50 for all client support $25 for one client.

Email Maintenance - IMPORTANT

Almost All Email Clients require monthly maintanence.
If not done, you can lose all your emails and addressbook.
If the email database becomes too large, it it is not compacted once in a while, or rebuilt the danger of loss increases.
Sending an email to the trash is not enough, you have to empty the trash also.

Macintosh Entourage - Start Entourage with option key down and select Compact database: Use this option to compact and to back up the current database files. You can use this option to help recover some space from the database.
SEE Entourage HowTo
Why It’s Critically Important to Backup Entourage

Mac and Win Thunderbird - To reclaim that space for the current account and compact folders in Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape or Mozilla:
* Select File | Compact Folders from the menu.
If your folders are big and you have deleted lots of (large) messages since the last compacting, this can take some time.
Thunderbird Tips

Windows Outlook -
The larger your PST file gets, the more chances are for it to become damaged. This happens because, while the PST file size is increasing, Outlook needs more and more resources to complete your tasks, so it becomes slower and more prone to errors.
To Force Compact Databse
In folder view, right click on Personal Folders
click on Properties for "Personal Folders"
Click on the Advanced... button
Click Compact Now button

Windows and Macintosh - A Free Database for Your Passwords

  • I got tired of losing my passwords and user names.
A few months ago, I created a database for my use.
I added and changed and updated it.

  • I have been using Filemaker for years. the advanced version allows you to create runtime databases that do not require a copy of Filemaker. You may have used one without realizing it was a Filemaker database.

  • If you would like to test version one The links below will download a zipped folder about 12Mb in size.
Folder is named PasswordsSerialsWIN.zip or PasswordsSerialsMAC.zip
The folder can be placed anywhere on your harddrive - even on a flash drive for easy transport.
Just do not remove or move anything in the folder. Within the folder just Click on "My Passwords" to start the database.
    Any feedback would be welcome.

Build Your Web Presence - My Results

Two years ago, I had very little presence on the internet. A search for me would turn up an ancient website I did more than a decade ago.
Several clients asked about promoting themselves and their businesses on the Web.
After eight months of testing, learning, reading, researching and redoing, this is the result of a Google Search for "david anders seattle". I have to add seattle to the search because there is an actor using the alias of David Anders. His web presence overwhelms any search done just for my name.
http://www.google.com/search?q=david+anders+seattle
Eight out of ten links on the first page are my connections, blogs and websites.

There is a Madmimi Newsletter about expanding your web presence, your internet footprint, your standing in searches on Google, Yahoo, and Bing that I sent to some several months ago.
The second one is about claiming your business listings on these services. (Yes, your business liisting exists, claiming it and customiziing it costs nothing but some of your time.

This is without paying for anyone's help or paying for listings.
You can do the same. There are 15 or 20 options that have appeared since I began the ressearch.
REMEMBER 15 to 30 year olds do not use the Yellow Pages.

How long did it take for you to create this?

I had most of the graphics ready. I did not have the layout or text prepared.
It took 2 hours on a Monday afternoon.
If I had had the layout and text prepared, it would have taken 15 minutes.
This is a test of the newsletter on Madmimi.com
(you can send unlimited emails to 100 hundred email addresses)
The goal is to send this through MailChimp.com - I haven't sent one from there, yet.
(you can send up to 12,000 emails a month to up to 2000 email addresses.)
